Battles In Islam History

Muhammad, the Messenger of God, had to fight a series of battles in the defense of Islam from his new home in Medina. Those battles in which he led the army of Islam in person, are called “Ghazwa” and those expeditions which he sent out from Medina under the command of any one of his companions, are called “Sariyya”.

Roughly speaking, the Prophet launched 80 campaigns during the ten years from his migration in A.D. 622 to his death in A.D. 632. Some of these campaigns were nothing more than reconnaissance missions.

The numbers involved in them were minuscule, and all they did was to watch the movements of some clan or tribe. Some were missionary expeditions. Many others were minor skirmishes. Still others were of interest only because of some particular incident attaching to them. I shall give a cursory account of the minor campaigns, and will then put the focus on the major battles of Islam.

Long before Islam, the Greeks and the Romans had learned that a battle could change the destinies of nations. Among the campaigns of the Prophet, there are five battles about which it can be said that they changed the destinies of nations. They are the battles of Badr, Uhud, Khandaq, Khyber and Hunayn.

These battles were inevitable. The Quraysh of Makkah believed that if all Arabs accepted Islam, it would mean to them (the Quraysh) the loss of all the pilgrim revenues, and the loss of their privileges which they enjoyed as the guardians of the idols. A triumph of Islam was correctly foreseen by them as a death blow to privilege. It was this fear, the fear of the loss of economic and political power and prestige that precipitated war between them and the Muslims.

Since the emigration of the Muslims from Makkah, a de facto state of war had existed between them and the Quraysh. In the early days in Medina, the Muslims did not dare to remove their armor at any time. Pickets were posted around the city every night to warn the citizens if the enemy made a sudden raid.

The Apostle could not sleep at nights being fearful of an attack at any time. It was in these circumstances that he had to take some defensive measures for the security of Medina. As head of the nascent state, its security was his first responsibility.

In the interests of security, the Muslims had to keep an eye on the movements of the enemy, his friends and his allies.

The Prophet sent out the first expedition in the ninth month of the first year of Hijra, under the command of his uncle, Hamza ibn Abdul Muttalib. Thirty Muhajirs took part in it. Their aim was to intercept a caravan of Quraysh. But a tribe, friendly to both sides, interposed between them. There was no fighting, and the expedition returned to Medina.

In the following month, the Prophet sent sixty Muhajirs under the command of his cousin, Obaida ibn al-Harith, to Rabigh, near the Red Sea. They encountered a caravan of the Quraysh. Both sides shot a few arrows at each other but there were no casualties. Two Makkan traders deserted their caravan, came over to the Muslim side, accepted Islam, and accompanied the expedition when it returned to Medina.

Obaida ibn al-Harith is said to have shot an arrow at the enemy. It was the first arrow shot for Islam.

Sir William Muir

Obaida is distinguished in tradition as he who upon this occasion, “shot the first arrow for Islam.” (The Life of Mohammed, London, 1877)

There were no more campaigns in the remainder of the first year of Hijra.

The Sword of The Prophet

While most "westerners" were still busy seeking the truth about Islam after 911, in mid 2007 Serge Trifkovic published a book about Islam called "The Sword of The Prophet" with additional teasing title "The politically incorrect guide to ISLAM history, theology, impact on the World."  ~ You still can get this book online today only for 20 bucks.

This book seemed to be famous back then, at least among those who did not know much about Islam as they do now. Their "old timer" comments show how much they appreciated it among others is here.

However, although the book had been widely discussed amongst the pro, but there were almost no rebuttal nor serious commentary from Islam scholars as if the book was completely ignored.

11 Years later, in late October 2018 Hazard and Catasthropes had their documentary videos that made based on this book - placed with same title - published on YouTube which you might have seen already here and here on this site.

Once again, when I tried to search for Islam Scholars' rebuttal for this particular, I found almost nothing except one countable commentary, that is a short and light 'rebuttal' suitable for both, the book and the videos, written by a netter called Logical7 in June 2013!

He wrote it - like every muslim would have written similarly - in respond to a thread of discussion about Trifkovic's book on their forum called Above Top Secret as follows:

This is the rebuttal to a recent thread and full credit to Mekhanics for posting it in the thread. I just thought it would be better to have a new thread.

So here's the link

Rebuttal

Mr. Serge Trifkovic rhetorically asks
“Explain the continuity of violence from the earliest day of Islam, from the earliest days of the prophet and his immediate successors throughout the 13 centuries of recorded history.”

Answer
Dear Sir, from the earliest day of Islam and the earliest days of the exalted prophet and his noble companions, five of whom were his immediate successors, the Commandment has been, “Hold back your hands” unless war is imposed upon you (QS. 4:77). Fighting was allowed only in self-defense (QS. 2:190).

Fight in the cause of God those who wage war against you, but do not commit aggression. God does not love aggressors. Every single battle the exalted prophet fought along with his noble companions, again, five of whom were his immediate successors, was in self-defense. The fact that they were fought around Madinah is sufficient proof of the defensive nature of these battles.

The most famous Battles of Badr, Uhud, Ahzab, all took place around Madinah. Who attacked the peaceful and progressive State of Madinah? The Battle of Hunain is the only exception of distance, but then the exalted prophet and his companions were peacefully returning from Makkah in AH 8 (629 CE) and two tribes (Hawaazan and Thaqeef) unexpectedly attacked them only to get miserably defeated.

For the greatest benevolent Revolution in all history, in all the battles, the loss of life was minimal with 259 Muslims and 759 opponents getting slain, a total of 1,018. Not a single non-combatant, a child, a woman or the elderly was ever killed or harmed by Muslims.

13 Centuries?
Sufficient it is to think of the greatest ever wars, WWI & WWII, fought in the Name of God between nations that called themselves Christian. Also, think of the longest ever HUNDRED YEARS WAR (French: Guerre de Cent Ans) which in fact lasted 116 years from 1337 to 1453 between France and Britain.
Edward Gibbon - History of The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire London 1788:

"…. The greatest crime, the greatest “sin” of Mohammad in the eyes of the Christian West is that he did not allow himself to be slaughtered, to be “crucified” by his enemies. He only defended himself, his family and his followers; and finally vanquished his enemies. Mohammad’s success is the Christians’ gall of disappointment!" He did not believe in any vicarious sacrifices for the sins of others.

Now, was Islam spread by the sword?

Was Islam Spread By the Sword?

One of the bizarre myths perpetuated about Islam, during the centuries of mistrust during and after the Crusades, is that Muslim armies forced people to accept Islam at the point of the sword. Unfortunately this myth survives to this day.

Many Western scholars have now repudiated this myth. The great historian De Lacy O’Leary wrote in “Islam At the Cross-roads”:

“History makes it clear however, that the legend of fanatical Muslims sweeping through the world and forcing Islam at the point of the sword upon conquered races is one of the most fantastically absurd myths that historians have ever repeated.”

Indeed, it is a historical fact, that Islam spread much faster during periods of peace than in periods of war. Islam continued to spread, as it does now, when Muslims were not prevailing economically, socially or politically.

HISTORY OF TOLERANCE AND MUTUAL RESPECTS
The Glorious Qur’an says:

Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from error
[Al-Qur’an 2:256]

Traditionally Muslims have treated other religions with respect, even when they were in a position to use force.

Muslims ruled Spain for about 800 years. During these 800 years, until Muslims were finally forced out by the crusaders, non-Muslims flourished in Spain.

Muslims have ruled Arabia for 1400 years, except for brief periods of British and French rule. Yet there are today 14 million Arabs who are Coptic Christians whose families have been Christians going back several generations.

The Muslims ruled India for about a thousand years. They had the power to forcibly convert each and every non-Muslim of India to Islam. Today more than 80% of the population of India is non-Muslim. All these non-Muslim Indians are bearing witness to the fact that Islam was not spread by the sword.

Thomas Arnold, a former Christian missionary in India, who cannot be accused of being pro-Islam, in his famous book ‘The Preaching of Islam’, indicates that there have been certain periods where Muslim rulers have diverted from this tolerance, but it was due to a deviation from Islamic principles, rather than conformance to them.

He concludes that the two primary reasons for the spread of Islam all over the world were merchants and the Sufis, two groups of people who went out, worked with humanity and gently invited others to their faith.

LEGAL SAFEGUARD FOR NON-MUSLIM UNDER ISLAMIC LAW
The Quran and Sunnah (Traditions of the Prophet) explicitly dictate regulations and rights for the protection of non-Muslim minorities living under the rule of Islam. The Prophet, peace be upon him (pbuh), even said that if a Muslims hurts a covenanted person, i.e. a non-Muslim living under the rule of Islam, or commits any injustice to him, then on the Day of Judgment the Prophet would be the advocate on behalf of the non-Muslim against the Muslim. What would be the sense and need for all of these prescriptions and advice, if Islam required that they be compelled to accept the religion?

THE RAPID SPREAD OF ISLAM
An article in Reader’s Digest ‘Almanac’, year book 1986, gave the statistics of the increase of percentage of the major religions of the world in half a century from 1934 to 1984. This article also appeared in ‘The Plain Truth’ magazine. At the top was Islam, which increased by 235%, and Christianity had increased only by 47%. May one ask, “Which war took place in this century which converted millions of people to Islam?

Indonesia is a country with almost 270 million of population that has the biggest number of Muslims in the world. The majority of people in Malaysia are Muslims. Similarly, Islam has spread rapidly on the East Coast of Africa. May one ask, “Which Muslim army went to Indonesia and Malaysia, and to the East coast of Africa?

Today the fastest growing religion in America and in Europe is Islam. Which sword is forcing people in the West to accept Islam in such large numbers?

Is it because of The Sword of The Prophet?
